Tight Leather Skirts Are Hot.

They really are. Well they could be hot in terms of temperature too, if you are wearing one in the Sahara. But otherwise, they do a lot for your legs.

“Utsavi, can you show us how to wear a black leather pencil skirt, please? Could we see business, date night and casual?”- Clare

So leather skirts are always tricky. They have so much of a personality that you don’t want to enhance it anymore or dampen it. Based on this problem, I have laid out a few options that could help you out.

casual

This could be a great casual option. Look for muscle tees or any loose ones and tuck them in. Avoid choosing any other colors but in backs, grays or whites. Tees with a faded retro look are the best options. At least I absolutely have always loved them. Wear plain black booties, avoid too much embellishments on them. Pair the outfit up with a slouch backpack and a stunning red lipstick. Now this outfit can also be work on a date night. I would just change the bag. Obviously if this date is more at a rock n roll bar and not an upscale dinner.

casual 2

If the first casual outfit is a little too ” dark” for you, then you can also try any white/gray loose tee or a boyfriend tee and tuck it in. Stripes would look great on this skirt too and for he safest bet, a cropped soft knit always works like a charm. For a more boho look, try tassels and tanned coloured bags.

work

Now wearing a leather skirt to work is always tricky. But if you pair them up with the right blouse, it will work just fine. Japanese prints on blouses are so stylish. I absolutely love japanese themed clothes. Once again, you don’t want blouses in any other colour at all. Avoid dramatic blouses as they will collide with the skirt. You can always wear the point-toes flats in black but if you do want to add some colour, then maybe a mauve look that include accessories and shoes can be worn too. Don’t wear a bright red lipstick at work with this skirt. Once again, you can opt for an ox-blood colour.

date night

For a night out whether fine dining or dancing, you can bolden your look by wearing sequined cropped tops. You can also try a lacy bustier with a fur vest. Once again, I would go for an oxblood matte lipstick than a bright red.

So these are the looks, hope I covered any doubts you had. For any more outfit requests or just to show any appreciation, do leave a comment or just show a like.

Hacks to make your life easier.

So I hunted all over the net and found some great hacks to make your life easier. No more piles of bags on your bed, no more lost hair pins and no more frustration. Here’s a list I compiled. Super easy and smart ideas. Check them out.

1. Break in your flats in under five minutes.

shoes

Step 1: Put on thick socks, and then your flats.
Step 2: Blow-dry your shoes around the tight sections for a few minutes.
Step 3: Keep your socks/flats on while it cools.
Step 4: Test them out, repeat process if you need them more stretched out.

2. Put clear nail polish on the inside of your rings.

nail polish

Your fingers will be free from green stains.

3. Use a pumice stone to de-fuzz a sweater.

sweater

4. Hang your purses with shower curtain hooks.

bags

5. White wine neutralizes red wine stains.

stains

Yeah, you read that correctly. When you’re at a party and you accidentally spill some red wine on your blouse, immediately pour white wine over the stain and let it air-dry. The white neutralizes the red, making it easier to take out the stain.

6. Store your makeup on a magnet board.

make up

8. Paint your keys with nail polish to easily distinguish the sets.

enhanced-buzz-1846-1373307028-10

It especially helps when you lend a spare key to a houseguest.

9. Chill your white wine with frozen grapes.

enhanced-buzz-26558-1372868901-13

This prevents the flavor from being watered down!

10. When you pack a suitcase, wrap your shoes in a shower cap.

enhanced-buzz-30194-1372958667-0

This will prevent the soles from touching your clean clothes.

11. Add a magnetic strip in your bathroom cabinet to support bobby pins and tweezers.

grid-cell-29579-1373297764-40

12. Put your necklace through a straw to keep the chain from tangling.

enhanced-buzz-23772-1372968240-6

13. Mount cutlery trays to store your jewelry.

grid-cell-30233-1373299522-27

14. Use two fingers to test out your bra fit.

enhanced-buzz-6926-1372972046-8

If you can’t comfortably fit two fingers under the band of your bra, it is too tight. If you can fit your entire fist under the band, it’s too loose.

15. Put baking soda in your flats to avoid smelly shoes.

grid-cell-1775-1373303201-3

When you put shoes on without socks, your feet sweat and start to smell. If you put baking soda in your flats, it will kill the bacteria and get rid of that gross smell.

16. Use your hair straightener to iron hems.

enhanced-buzz-26113-1373119133-13

17. Run your mascara wand under hot water for easier application.

enhanced-buzz-10768-1373304693-9

Also, do NOT pump your mascara wand in and out of the tube — that causes it to clump. Twirl the wand inside the bottle before applying another coat.

18. Use ice cubes to remove gum from your hair.

enhanced-buzz-30389-1373305069-4

It will harden the gum, making it easier to remove. You can also use this method for getting gum off the soles of shoes.

Beat the Monsoon Grays.

The monsoons have finally arrived in Bombay. And it is a bitch to dress normally while walking through those flooded roads while cab drivers don’t want to take you anywhere and continue being jerks, losers who sit on the street dying to see girls with wet tshirts and you get the point. Oh don’t even get me started on the nightmares my hair has to go through.

Anyway I put up this post to help you deal with monsoon anxiety. The outfits are fun, practical and definitely stylish. Well at least according to me. Keep reading.

1. Try and wear browns and greens for the earthy look. In this way, even if you get some muck on you while splashing around in the puddles, nobody will notice. A long dress if perfect, not muck skin show and if you get wet, still lighter than jeans. If you work, then just throw on a loose unbuttoned shirt or a blazer to look formal. Finish the look with rubber flats and a faux leather satchel available plenty at Colaba Causeway.

dress

2. If you still prefer pants, then invest in a pair of lose trousers available at Hill Road Bandra. Fold them up a bit, pair it with a mint shirt or any other colour which pops out and you are good to go. gray

3. If you are the ones who like to stick to blacks to make sure nothing is see through when wet, then try wearing lose black pants, with a striped top to break the monotony of only black and carry a white envelope clutch or any other contrasting colour clutch. This outfit is great for dinners, lunch and also work.

black and white

4. Wear a lose comfortable tee, pair it with a high-low skirt and finish the look with faux leather combat boots or just any rain boots. Nothing can go wrong with this combination.

skirt

5. Lose flannel shorts, comfy top with a cardigan to keep you warm. Tie your hair up in a bun and pin the strands when having a bad hair day. Perfect for a walk out in the rain or drives to lonavala or even for lunch.

greens

6. And if you really want to wear bright colours to beat the monsoon grays, then just put on a cute summer dress and pair it up with a bright blazer and some fun loafers.

Looks for the bookworm: Fashion inspired by The Great Gatsby

Gatsby has been adapted for film and stage numerous times – including an opera in 1999! – but the most popular adaptations are, arguably, the movie versions released in 1974 and 2013

While the elder of the two adhered mostly to the wardrobe of the time period, the menswear in the film tended to stray towards a more timely aesthetic. The 2013 film, however, blew open the doors on all things tried-and-true, and strove for an ultra-glam flapper look all its own.

Designed by director Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar-winning wife, Catherine Martin, in conjunction with fashion juggernaut Miuccia Prada, the 2013 film’s frocks are lavish and luxe, just like they would have been in the time period, with a slightly updated fix: the pair combed Prada’s archives for 40 classic looks, that were then revamped to blow even our modern minds. Take, for instance, the “chandelier” dress that Daisy wears to Gatsby’s party in the film: while it looks perfectly suitable for the glammed-up gal-about-town back in 1922, the frock is, in fact, an adaptation of a dress from Prada’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection.

The idea motivating the designing duo was that while the gowns would fit the time period, they weren’t, as Martin said, making a “documentary,” but instead, capturing the fiercely modern man’s prose in a new fashion onscreen.

How to add Gatsby in your wardrobe?

By integrating specific colors used in the novel, and tying them to prominent themes within it as well, you too can integrate a little Gatsby into your modern life!

Gatsby Green and the American Dream

emerald gatsby

Gatsby himself is closely associated with the color green, representative of hope and future.

In the story, Gatsby serves as the embodiment of hope, being that he is constantly pursuing another chance with Daisy, and that his story represents a typical “rags to riches” Cinderella tale. In short, Gatsby exemplifies the “American Dream.” Unfortunately, Fitzgerald’s story is about the decay of American morals in the ’20s, and like the decade in which he flourished, Gatsby’s story ends on a tragic note.

Interpret Gatsby’s status as both a symbol of hope and the American Dream by riffing on his “beautiful shirts” with one in a shade of emerald green. Pair it with a cream skirt and clutch to create a look that contains both trendy and classic elements. A pair of ship wheel earrings links to Gatsby’s origins,  while also hinting at the light at the end of a certain dock.

Wilted Daisy, Tainted by Gold

daisy gatsby

Traditionally, white symbolizes innocence, while gold symbolizes wealth. As such, Daisy is often depicted wearing white dresses, but like her floral namesake, the true center of a Daisy is golden.

Daisy was Gatsby’s dream, his “golden girl” in her “white tower,”  but over the five years since he’s seen her, she’s changed. Fitzgerald’s sharp take on the excess and uselessness of the upper classes, the old money in East Egg, and their greed, is all showcased in Daisy’s apathetic and unapologetic attitude: something that once may have been innocent, is now tainted by wealth.

Take on one of Daisy’s white dresses, and her high status, by accessorizing with golden tones. A studded headband, gold pumps, an tasseled  purse, and dazzling nail polish are feminine with a hint of edginess, perfectly representing the leading lady’s sharper edges beyond her floating flightiness.

Eckleberg Blue, and The Fault lines of Reality

blue gatsby

In the novel, Eckleberg’s eyes are described as blue. This color is commonly interpreted to mean unhappiness, but in Gatsby, it also comes to mean illusions and alternatives to reality. For instance, Wilson views the eyes symbolically, in his madness, as those of God. This would explain why the color also surrounds Gatsby, and why Myrtle is wearing a blue dress when she meets with Tom in front of her husband, as they themselves are not who they say they are.

Explore these fault lines of reality by highlighting the hue in a diaphanous high-low dress. Blur these delineations even further withlow boots grounded in the same ashy tones from which the billboard rises. Multi-toned nail polish ties to the many other colors represented within Fitzgerald’s symbolism.

Miami Street Style

For those of you who are new to my blog, I have been traveling around the world since about a little more than a year. I was in Miami for a few months and this blog post is about the street style I came across in sunny Miami. I was in San Francisco before this for a year. Fashion is very different in both the coasts. San Francisco is a very hipster city. Everyone likes their individuality and develop their own fashion sense. Also as it is cold, most of the times they are layered. People in San Francisco are suckers for vintage and thrift clothing.

Whereas in Miami…

What I Like and What I Don’t.

This post is about what I think has gone out of style and what fascinates me right now. I am not going to say that these are the current trends and that kind of nonsense. Just what I think has now become a cliche and needs to be let gone off and what would be a  good investment for your closet.

1. Aviators are out.

I don’t know why they even lasted so long. I am tired of them. To me, they seem like a lazy way to try to look stylish. Lennons, catty ones and minty colours are to go for now.

Screen Shot 2013-03-30 at 12.27.29 AM

2. Pretty footwear is out.

Have some fun. Jump around. Splash around in puddles and stay comfortable. That’s why dainty, petite and girly shoes are out. Your shoes need to protect you and not the other way around. Man up, ladies.

Screen Shot 2013-03-30 at 12.41.15 AM

3. Hairbands are out.

So tired of seeing grown up women wearing slim hairbands in colours such as baby pink and with pears and diamonds on it. You are not a child. No age or outfit will ever be an excuse to wear those hairbands. If you do want to be flirty, try floral crowns instead. So different and so pretty.

Screen Shot 2013-03-30 at 12.37.09 AM

4. Lace is out.

I don’t need to say anything more. Try holographic accessories and clothes. Be edgy. I love holographs.

Screen Shot 2013-03-30 at 12.49.52 AM

5. Hearts, butterflies, owls are out.

Wear accessories that are angular. Try sharp cuts and strokes. I love pyramids. Always has and always will.

What I think is in style, doesn’t necessarily mean you should think the same too. Tell me what your opinion is. Any quirky trend that has missed my eye? Anythin unique out there? Small Make-up Tricks That Can Go A Long Way

Here is a bunch of stuff I have tried on myself and friends and seems to have worked perfectly fine. Keep reading sistas!

1. How to make tiny lips look plump:

Take a little matte brown eye shadow and lightly shade just below the center of your bottom lip, this gives shape  and makes the center of your lips more in focus.

You could also try, using a little shimmery powder highlighter in the center of your top and bottom lips.

tumblr_m6p9h0kjGc1ql7cx6o1_400_large

2. Easy sultry eyes:

Combine a little black eyeliner in with your concealer and apply it to your eyelid for a simple smokey eye. Finish the look off with black mascara and eyeliner.

3. Finding the perfect pink shade:

The perfect pink shade for you will be a colour that matches the inside of your gums, a little brighter is okay to but avoid going lighter or you will look pale and tired.

75cfa7f1b2d3b7cc57f671d3f6b8a428

4. Wear perfume correctly:

Don’t use perfume on your neck, décolletage or the back of your ears. Most perfumes contain alcohol which makes the skin more sensitive to Silverlight so when it comes into contact with the sun it results in pigmentation.

5. Best time to wear make-up:

Apply your makeup after a hot bath, as the warmth stimulates your blood flood and the steam pushes out impurities from your skin, which helps your makeup to glide on more smoothly.

How To Be Coy With Your Clothing

I get it, not everyone is comfortable wearing shorts and stripy clothes. Reasons can be various like religion, body image, scars or maybe just the weather. But to be stylish not always do you have to wear less clothes. Below are certain ways to dress coy, casual and chic.

1. Flannel Pants are always a better option that just jeans. Wear a stretched crop top in bright colors and go slightly Desi with a jhola, kolhapuris and glass bangles. Finish the look with some sunglasses.

Screen Shot 2013-03-20 at 7.29.03 PM

2.  Wear a pastel hi-low skirt that is tight at the waist. Wear a full sleeve tight tee. Now once again choose between going western with neons and a satchel or going Desi with a chokar and a jhola. Finish the look with beige combat boots.

Screen Shot 2013-03-20 at 7.46.42 PM

3. Not all dresses need to be tight. Wear a slug maxi dress and accessorise it with some chunky black jewelry.Screen Shot 2013-03-20 at 7.50.53 PM

4. Leggings. Always the next best thing to jeans. Wear a funky print, hi-low shirt (you don’t want to show your assets to strangers) and once again, combat boots.

Girl’s got baggage.

6764570057_34dd141320_z_large

Yes everyone’s got baggage but it’s easier when the baggage is stylish. OCD met someone who has lots of stylish baggage and also like distributing it. Meet Pria. She is the designer for Lavie bags. OCD asked a few questions and this is what she replied.
OCD: How important is a bag in a woman’s life?
Pria: A women’s bag is her best friend even more than diamonds! With my faithful bag by my side I am a Superwoman!

memorialday-full_large

OCD:  If your bag could hold a solution for anything, what would you wish it be and for what?
Pria: If I could have a magic salon in my bag I would never have a bad hair day! I wish I could wash, condition and style my hair anytime anywhere…sigh…

OCD: If your bag could be big enough to hold any object in it, what would you carry around with you everywhere?
Pria: My cat Neo. i love him sooo much and miss him when i am away for the whole day.

OCD: Which according to you is the ideal bag? Does LAVIE have it?
Pria: My ideal bag is just like me. It does all the working hard and partying hard and still looks hot no matter what. I love the Lavie Neroli shoulder bag…it is in a spanking new Tangerine colour which is my favourite!

Lavie Neroli Shoulder bag

OCD: Can a LAVIE bag become a woman’s best friend?
Pria: A Lavie bag is already a woman’s best friend, it holds all a girl’s secrets, and carries all her precious stuff and makes her look drop dead gorgeous all the time…

OCD: Lastly, what do you have in your bag currently?
Pria: OMG! I carry my entire world in my bag! The book Life of Pi, my cell phone, my I-pod, my secret diary and my lucky pen, my MAC lip gloss and eye pencil, keys on a Kipling furry monkey key chain, hand sanitiser, and wallet with a photo of my sweet heart and Neo my cat, cash and cards.

Remember Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air?

In the off chance you don’t know this show (where have you been?), here’s the basic premise: Will Smithplays a fictionalized version of himself that gets into trouble while living in West Philadelphia, and is sent to Bel-Air to live with his wealthy aunt and uncle, and their kids. The show’s funniest moments come from Will’s street-smart ways clashing with the high-class lifestyle of his new guardians.

The show originally aired from 1990 to 1996, but rather than highlighting the grungy styles of the eraFresh Prince‘s look focused on the brightly colored California hip-hop aesthetic. Want to steal some of — okay, cheese disclaimer — Big Willy’s Style? Read on, girls!

fresh-prince-of-bel-air-style-2

Will Smith basically played himself in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, so his outfits stuck pretty close to the young, bright, eccentric, and colorful styles he rocked as a rapper. Fresh Prince Will is always seen in color — frompastels to day-glow brights. He also rocks patterned pieces, mostly sticking to geometric patternsand abstract, arty prints.

Will Smith’s favorite pieces reflected the popular trends of the era. He often wore windbreakersparachute pants reminiscent of MC Hammer, overalls, and stone-washed denim. Though harem pants and stone washed jeans have made a bit of a comeback, rocking overalls or a multi-colored windbreaker takes serious sartorial guts — and, well, I’m always up for a challenge! To pull these looks off without looking costumey, try to keep the rest of your outfit somewhat basic and modern for a healthy mix of old and new.

 Outfit Ideas:
fresh-prince-outfit-1

If you’re bold enough to wear a neon printed windbreaker, embrace the awesome and make it the centerpiece of your look. Wear your statement jacket with a simple pair of skinny jeans and a graphic tee. (I picked a Lakers shirt since the show was set in LA, but let it be known that my allegiance will always be to the OKC Thunder!) Keep this looking modern and not too throwback-y by pairing the look with cool sneakers and an eye-catching headband.

fresh-prince-outfit-2

We all have mixed feelings on harem pants. I like them because they’re comfortable like sweats but look really fashionable, but I know not everyone feels the same. The key to pulling them off (especially if they’re loudly patterned, like these) is to stick to solid colors for the rest of your outfit. A black tank and denim vest finish the ensemble, and look great when accessorized with cute sunglasses, fun sneakers, and a funky necklace.

fresh-prince-outfit-3

One of Will Smith’s ’90s signatures, both on TV and off, was a loudly patterned button-up shirt. As mentioned before, pop culture heavyweights like Tyler, the Creator and NBA star Russell Westbrook are keeping that trend alive today. To make it college girl-friendly, though, try rolling up the sleeves and buttoning it up halfway. Add a pair of colored jeans and bold sneaker wedges for a playful, ’90s hip-hop vibe. Finish with a bracelet and a cool hair accessory.
